She was small, not over five feet and it was plain to see that if it weren't for the clothes she'd be like those doll-shaped creatures one saw in the Hawaiian Islands. Three Marines in the group slowly raised their rifles and, at an unspoken command, fired at point blank range. The three shots sounded like one. Without a sound, the figure withered and sank to the ground. An examination of the body disclosed [[strikethrough]] three [[/strikethrough]] two hand grenades, one hidden under each arm. A slight pressure of her elbows to her sides and she and perhaps five or six Americans would have been blown sky high.

The fighting continued slow and arduous, The Marines have been working on a combination cave [[strikethrough]] a pillbox [[/strikethrough]] and pillbox for five days trying to dislodge the enemy. It had been thought cleared out several times but each time, at night, the Japs would infiltrate back into it. It had three underground levels . Most of the caves encountered were sealed by running bulldozers against them and covering the openings with the black ash. In all the years that the Japs had had Iwo they never had more than a footpath running to the top of Mt. Suribachi, or Hot Rocks, as it was called.
