later a second plane burst into flames, exploded and fell into the ocean off the northwest part of the island. I [[strikethrough]] xx [[/strikethrough]] was so mad at having my plans go awry that I didn't have time to be frightened. Although the alert was still on I jumped back into the jeep, drove back to the tent and phoned Ed. I told him I was unavoidably detained and that I wouldn't be able to see him that night. Then I belatedly extended a welcome to Iwo. Crew # 1 went on duty in the event that one of the night fighters would have to land under black-out. I listened to Agate Base vector the night fighters around in search of more Jap planes. Then the all-clear sounded.

This morning I looked all over the island but couldn't [[strikethrough]] sm [[/strikethrough]] seem to locate the 334th. I came back tired and disgusted. Ed phoned the trailer and came over a few minutes later.

I hadn't seen him in over two years and we meet out here on Iwo Jima. He hadn't changed much - seemed to have lost a bit more hair, put on some weight and seemed a bit wiser. He wassick of flying, tired of B-29's and like me, afraid of airplanes. We both agreed that what we wanted most of all was to go back to Brooklyn and sit down for a while. Also a glass of fresh milk. We took some pictures together and then had supper. After supper we drank beer and talked for several hours. He wanted me to write to me to write to my folks and tell them to tell his folks that we met and that he is now on Tinian. He is unable to do so at present. I showed him the GCA trailer but since
