3 June 1945

Last day of K.P. and glad of it. Never peeled so many...never [underlined] saw [/underlined] so many potatoes before. When I read about automatic potato peelers in the Army I'll know what it means. Me.

     Found out later in the day that a scare had swept the island.  The report was that 1000 Jap planes loaded with paratroopers were heading toward Iwo.  Everyone on the island was armed to the teeth.  Me?...I was peeling potatoes.

     The rumor about Guam seems to be a strong one.  The way I heard it seven of us are to go back for experimental purposes i.e. to combine glide-path localizer and GCA for quicker traffic handling.  Then probably on for another invasion.

     Had an interesting discussion of the book Earth and High Heaven with Donald Easum whose dad is a professor of history at Wisconsin... He's in the AACS detachment too, (Donald, not his dad, stupid) I met him for the first time four days ago.  We were on K.P. together and during that time we had many delightful discussions.  It was quite a relief to talk to someone with half a grain of intelligence.
