on what's left. The boys are learning how to fly their airplanes and how to conserve fuel. Very few had to land at Iwo.

This afternoon we practiced with a Charwoman and two Chickens flying off its left wing. Grabbed a hurried shower and dashed off to a movie.Halfway through the performance my endurance gave out and I took my departure. It was pretty bad.

About 1 a.m. I was awakened by someone shouting "Get those lights off." I looked out in time to see the radio range obstruction lights go out.  At the same time the air raid siren started wailing. The entire northern end of the island was blacked out while the south end was lit up like a Christmas tree. Dismissing all thoughts of inquiring at length into these strange machinations I hurriedly awakened the others and picked out a solid foxhole. The lights on Maple Field and atop Mt. Suribachi never went out.  Soon a PBL landed and the all-clear sounded.  I launched into a description of tonights doings in some very colorful language and went back to sleep.

We watched the P-51's take off for a mission this morning. The usual crowd was there to watch the take-offs and they got what they came for. One fighter plane
