one said a bomb had landed up near the north end of the island. There were two Japanese bombers, one was shot down by a Black Widow going away from the island, the other was chased for 150 miles but got away. The ack-ack stopped, the all-clear was sounded and we went back to sleep. Guess they'll be back tomorrow. Quite a welcome to the island for the new officer. 

24 June 1945

We lost three fighters on the last sweep over Japan (airfields 65 miles north of Japan.) One fighter was down over the target, the other two bailed out over positions near our submarines and were picked up. It was a 1600 mile flight. 

Today was Sunday and we did almost nothing. You can even cross out the word "nothing"...It has been raining intermittantly for the past several days. Laundry came back today...They did a fine job on my mattress cover. 

We saw a fine movie this evening, "The Clock", but a very bright moon didn't make it easier to see the film... The moon is bright tonight - I picked out a convenient foxhole before going to bed. 

Letter from Stan. He said the censor cut out a part my letter to him which started with, and [[underlined]] that [[/underlined]] part of it was cut out of his letter!.. More nurses arrived this morning. This place is getting alarmingly
