that's when the textbook is inadequate.  Soon the beautiful theories and procedures so thoroughly drilled into them will be rooted out.  That's when they will be qualified to play with the lives of the men in the airplanes.  It all comes from practice.

Since Andy was on K.P. I had to replace him on switchboard from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.  Wrote several letters, made some coffee, watched the night work on Channel B and, at 3 a.m., went to bed.

6 July 1945

I awoke very early, had breakfast, and went to bed.  I slept through dinner and long afterward.  When I awoke I was hungry and promptly assaulted the food which I received in the newly arrived packages.  On going down into the unit it was with great surprise that I found a new floor had been placed in the supply tent.  The new boys were operating the unit and I refrained from giving any directions on running the set.  If they asked any questions I answered them, otherwise they were on their own.  That's the way I would want it if I were in their shoes.

The fighters, smarting from yesterday's fiasco, took off this morning.  I felt sorry for whoever got in their way.
