I am away behind in my correspondence but it's been so hot during the day that by the time night rolls around I haven't the inclination nor the ambition to write letters.

18 July 1945

  Until today I had been using a couple of bottles of beer to serve as bookends. Until today that is. Someone drank one of my bookends. Katz admitted the crime by hotly protested the use to which good beer was being put. In its place I set the bottle of blood plasma and traded the other bookend for a bottle of coke.
We saw an excellent show this evening, "Winged Pigeons" including about a dozen members of the cast from Winged Victory i.e. Peter Lind Hayes as M.C., Jerry Adler (harmonica) brother of Larry, Danny Scholes who sang with Glenn Miller and others. During the number "The Desert Song" the five inch ack-ack opened up for one burst which shook the area with concussions but no one in the audience batted an eye.  The singer ad libbed "...flak in the moon lit sky..." byt very few people caught it.

19 July 1945

The modulator is out of kilter again but I'll be damned if I'm going to pull shift, detail and do maintenance.

  Still building the Quonset hut. There were four ofus on detail and in the four hours we "worked"
