7 August 1945
Trotted down to the link school this afternoon and succedded in getting about an hour of link time. This morning they caught up with me and placed me on a plumbing detail for the new mess hall. Now I am a plumber. Oh yes, I also dug a ditch for the pipe to the grease pit. So I am also a ditch digger.

8 August 1945.
The first news of the atom bomb came this morning. I noted that D. Luis Alvarez of MIT had a hand in the making of the bomb. He also figured largely in the devlopment og GCA. Also the new High Altitude Bomber radar set, the Eagle. Speculation about the atomic bomb has been rife. Never have I seen so much interest in news broadcastes as of today.

9 August 1945
The big news was of Russia's entry into the war but it was almost overshadowed by the results of the first atomizer attack. I think everyone is getting to be too optimistic about the end of the war. Lots of fellows are going around taking bets that the wall will be over in ten days. I'd like to get a piece of that. I'd be worth losing fifty dollars.
