pg.136 down to pick them up. We had a party late tonight in honor of the imminent departure. Some of the boys were glum. They thought Okinawa would only be a short stopping place before Tokyo. I envied them. As long as I was going to stay in the Pacific, and I sure as hell wasn't going to be sent back to the States for a long time, I would like to go to Japan. 19 August 1945 Team Seventeen pulled out this afternoon. Now only team Fourteen is left on Iwo as far as GCA is concerned. I can open my mouth a little wider oday. More sulfa etc. 20 Augus 1945 The doc says I can leave anytime I want to. Went up to the Tag and my priority was still there. If the plane comes in tonight I leave at 8:30 tomorrow morning for the Mariannas. This my be my last day on Iwo and after almost six months here I am quite pleased about leaving. I think I am beginning to get Rock Happy. This will be my last entry. After I leave Iwo I will no longer continue to keep this record. As a record primarily of Iwo Jima and the events immediately preceeding it, it must be closed now that I am leaving. The war is over and the long sweating-out period on Hawaii will shortly begin. It will be along time before I get back to the States but when I do and for years afterward I will occasionally leaf through this story and remember that war and death are never glamorous.
