Some years later, in 1935, Sikorsky's brilliant S-43 replaced smaller marine aircraft on Pan American's Latin American routes. even with big loads of cargo and fuel, it accommodated 10 passengers. Two 750 hp. Pratt & Whitney Hornets boosted its cruising speed to 166 m.p.h. Range 775 miles. Wright: Empty, 12,750 lb.; Loaded, 19,500 lb. Wingspread, 86 ft. Length 51 ft. 2 in.

Meanwhile, in 1932, Sikorsky fulfilled Pan American specifications for a really big oceangoing aircraft, with the S-40 - the first plane to bear the fitting title "Clipper." (Incidentally, "Clipper" applied. to aircraft is a registered trade name and is applicable only to Pan American ships). The S-40 mounted four 575 hp. Pratt and Whitney engines; cruised at 115 m.p.h.; and carried 31 passengers. Its length was 76 ft. 8 in.; its wingspread 114 ft. Empty it weighed 21,000 lb. Loaded, 34,000 lb.

The Sikorsky S-42 was the first plane launched (in 1934) in America for regualar service over full trans-oceanic ranges. It could carry 32 passengers and big loads of other cargo over a 1,200 mile range. It cruised at 160 m.p.h. With four Pratt & Whitney 700 hp. Wasps, it weighed 19,764 lb. empty; 38,000 lb. fully loaded. Length, 67 ft. 8 in.; Wingspread 114 ft. 2 in. The S-42B, a later model, had a gross weight of 42,000 lb.

Also in 1934, the Martin-built M-130 flying boats of the China Clipper class, were launched for service across the Pacific - the world's longest ocean transport assignment. With ten passengers and full loads of mail and express it had a range of 3,200 miles. On lesser distances it can carry 48 passengers. for Pratt & Whitney twin wasps of 800 hp. each gave it a cruising speed of 163 m.p.h.; a loaded weight of 53,000 lb.; and empty weight of only 23,100. Length, 90 ft. 10 in. Wingspread 130 ft.

Now the Boeing-built B-314, Pan American's great new Atlantic-type Clipper stands out as the culmination of a decade of step-by-step development. For 3,200 miles it can carry some 34 passengers plus tons of other cargo. Four huge Wright Cyclones of 1,500 hp. each give it a cruising speed of 165 m.p.h. Fully loaded it weighs 82,500 lb. Its length is 109 ft.; its wingspread 152 ft.
