HORTA IS A NERVE CENTER FOR TRANSATLANTIC CABLES
On tiny Fayal Island, six companies, representing five nations, operate in one communications building. One of the largest cable stations in the world, it is a clearing house for a network of 15 undersea lines. Colonel and Mrs. Lindbergh landed here on their round-the-Atlantic survey.

Tourists visiting Fayal in the Azores always take away lasting impressions of the lovely scenery and fine climate.
Horta, the capital of the district, possesses a fine natural harbor and an artificial breakwater, and promises to be an important air-base on the European-Northamerican route.
Lovely panoramas are visible from all parts of the island, particularly entrancing being the Valley of Flamengos, the Espalamaca Road & the extinct volcanic crater (the Caldeira, 3,350 ft. high and 1,200 ft. deep) as well as the superb & varied views of Pico (7,200 ft. high). From its flowered country-side & from the roads gaily bordered with hydrangeas comes the name - THE BLUE ISLAND.
In the town is situated the greatest submarine cable station in the world; there is also a powerful Naval Radio Station, one of the best of its type.
Tennis courts, football grounds and one of the finest social clubs in the whole of Portugal are added attractions.
