Chandler did vary his routine occasionally by just humming the tune through without the words. Uncle Gus could hardly have done that, since "Constitutionality and indivisibility" had not been set to music.

We left New York [[crossed out]] lat [[/crossed out]] [[handwritten]] late [[/handwritten]] Sunday afternoon, September 9th. Next day I was disturbed to find that we were quite alone on the sea. With submarines prowling around I should have been glad to see an armed escort. But I was somewhat reassured when, going out on deck the morning of the 11th, I saw there that we were ascending a narrow channel with land on both sides. We were going through the Narrows at Halifax. The channel ends in a round basin a couple of miles wide. In that basin the Adriatic dropped anchor. We were to be part of a convoy assembling there.
