"Short Women"

"Oh, but isn't she short" is a remark
often made about women 5'2" tall and under. There are several tricks that can be used to make the short woman appear much taller than she really is.

By dropping a hemline and lifting
the chin, inches will be added to the
actual height of a "shortie". Dresses
are longer this year whether we like
it or not...from 1 1/2" to 2" inches
longer than they were last season.
Half-of-the-calf is an excellent length. Straight slim skirts are the type for the short woman to wear.

A row of buttons from the waist to
the neck line helps to elongate the figure because buttons accent the direction in which they're going. Clever tucking and piping the full length of a dress gives the illusion of height.

Two-toned dresses, a lighter bodice
and dark skirt tend to shorten the
already short figure. Avoid cutting your heigth by wearing an outfit that's the same color. Match up your dress and hat.

Hats and high heels are items that
will do wonders. Brims rolled up or
sweeping upward are good as are hairdo's under them.

You don't have to look short if you
don't want to. Try some of these tricks
and watch the results.

[[underline] SEWING [[/underline]]
A few helpful hints

Work from the underarm down when joining seams. Join shoulder seams working from the neck outward to armhole.

In order to prevent sheer materials
from pulling when stitching, stitch
seams over a strip of paper; then
remove the paper.

Mercerized thread should be used
when stitching all cotton, linen and
dull woolen materials; silk thread for
silks, rayons and woolens that have a
sheen.

Press each seam after stitching. Pressing takes away that "Homemade"
appearance.

All sewing threads should be a shade darker than the material.

Clip the seam allowance after curved
seams are joined. This will prevent
the material from drawing.

Always adjust your pattern before
cutting material. This will make
fitting very simple.

Buy your dress patterns according to your bust size; skirt and slacks patterns according to hip measurement; coat and suit patterns the same
as for a dress.

Childrens patterns are bought according
to breast measurement or nearest size.

When pinning two pieces of material
together, always insert the pins at right angles to the edges.

*** [[underline] HOME DECORATING [[/underline]] ***

Color in the Home

Color is one of the most important
things to be considered in decorating
the home. It can either be attractive,
dull, gay, warm, cool, striking or
inviting and hundreds of other ways,
depending upon how it is used.

There are certain basic rules to be
followed, if color is to give to the
home the desired effect. The decorators
rule of three variations of value in,
color-vivid, tint and grayed tones, make for a successful color scheme. The colors may be complementary, such as yellow and violet, red and green or blue and orange. They may also be analogous, such as green, yellow-green and yellow. Regardless of color scheme, the rule of "Three" should always be applied.

[[underline]] SHADES [[/underline]]

While choosing your favorite colors, Choose also, your favorite shades. Some people like gay, light shades and others prefer deep, rich, jewel-like
tones. Let your home express you. Don't select a color because an interior
decorator suggested it, or because
