KINGSBLOOD ROYAL

Sinclair Lewis
Kingsblood Royal, the Literary Guild's choice for June, is a blow at the smug white of the Northern cities--at the man who merely dabbled in race prejudice until the industrial needs of World War II caused thousands of migrant Negro workmen to blacken his lily-white doorstep.

Such a dabbler, at first, is Neil Kingsblood, wounded officer-veteran of World War II. He later reads an old letter which proves to him that he is one-thirty-second-part Negro himself. It is an agonizing question to him as to whether to admit this Negro blood when he knows the misery this admission will create for his wife and daughter.

Neil finds the answer when he visits the local colored section and finds out that Negroes are human beings. When he publicly confesses his Negro blood and associates with Negroes, he loses every single ones of his friends. His wife is the only woman who will stand by him, and not one employer in Grand Republic will give him a steady job.

Finally he is almost lynched by a horde of furious white men; armed with shotguns.

FALL FASHIONS
August turns "milady's" thoughts to her fall wardrobe and more so this year because of the drastic changes i fashions we have noted creeping into the styles since the fabric restrictions were lifted.

One style expert described the fall silhouette as the "inverted wine glass" that is to say shoulders will have little or not padding, waist lines will be as small as one can get them, hips will be rounded, yes even padded and skirts will definitely be longer; they may be reed slim and slit for comfort in walking or voluptuously full and swirlingly graceful.

All of this will naturally tend to wards a more feminine appearance. To add to this femininity laces and ribbons especially velvet ribbons are being used.

The fabric used for these fashions are luxiuriously rich. We will see stiff fabrics in faille, brocade taffeta, slipper satin, costume velvets as well as pure silks in crepe, silk velvet and chiffons for softer effect. Woolens may be found soft and draped or hard finished and tailored.

Fall colors are tantalizingly beautiful. We see the very dresy and always good frocks in black and satin i especially good this fall as well as the gem colored satins in ice blue, champaign beige, silver grey and many shades of brown. All shades of green and hunter green in particular will gain popularity and is quite dramatic for any one who carry it well but beware of the too bright greens clashing with the complexion. Wine red has again put in an appearance after disappearing almost completely during the way. We find hats, bags, shoes and gloves to match or contrast with all of those colors. The hats are larger covering the head completely and this naturally requires shorter or smoothly styled hair.
