THE ORIGIN OF LABOR DAY

Labor Day, as a holiday owes its origin to several causes. In some states there seems to have been a
desires by the legislators to show their sympathy for the toiling masses who couldn't afford to lose even one day's work by taking a vacation day at any season of the year, and therefore a day was set aside whereby they could legally lay aside all work and yet not lose
that day's wages. In other states the motive for appointing a legal labor holiday was more political than
sympathetic. Such leaders had as their motive securing the favor of the laboring classes in order that their
votes might be obtained when the day of election arrived. Whatever the cause for its origin, Labor Day, as a holiday has steadily grown in favor since its first celebration by the Knights of Labor in New York in 1882.

332nd FIGHTER WING IS ORGANIZED AT LOCKBOURNE

Saturday morning, August 30, 1947, marked another milestone in Negro progress. The recently designated and newly activated 332nd Fighter Wing was no longer an idea
or plan on paper, but a physical khaki clad reality--heart warming in all of its military splendor.

At nine o'clock, each man was on the parade ground standing erectly, head held high with pride as Colonel
B. O Davis, Jr. and his staff passed through the ranks inspecting each man.

To these men has been passed the banner carried so high and so proudly by the famous 99th Pursuit Squadron and the equally illustrous 332nd Fighter Group. They have blazed the trail and paid the price in BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS. Your trust is a sacred one--wear it with pride, but guard it well!!
