A CHILD'S FORMATIVE YEARS--ONE TO FIVE

"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Children between the ages of ones and five need protection, understanding, love and education because these years form a basis for the future personalities.

A favorable home atmosphere will encourage the development of a correct attitude in the child, who when he faces the world, must interpret it in accordance with the experiences and conceptions he has gained at home.
For since the family is the child's first community and social unit, it represents to him a picture of life in general and all depends on how closely and truthfully the family pictures the larger world outside.

Each child has abilities and faculties which can be commended, and each has sore spots which need tender care. Without having faith in the child, however, no one will be able to instill in him a better opinion of himself. Self-confidence means courage--this should be instilled in all children.

The concepts of a child are very much influenced by his position in the family. If there are brothers and sisters, parents should supervise play periods. In case of an only child, he should be encouraged to play with other children of the same age group in order to feel his own importance and work out problems for himself during these play periods. If parents do not have time supervise play periods, a nursery is the proper place for pre-school children. The habits formed during the ages from one to five, are long-lived.

We should give all that we have to our children, because through them we offer mankind something more than we ourselves are--the next generation!

COMMITTEE REPORTS

[[underline]] ATHLETIC [[/underline]]
The Officers' Bowling Alley opened in March, at which time several members of the Officers' Wives Club started to learn how to bowl. By June there were four members who bowled regularly and showed a great interest in the sport. During the summer a bowling team was started among the officers' wives and these four members became a part of the team. We have challenged two teams since September--the Officers' Bowling team and a ladies team in town.

We do hope that all of those who want to learn to bowl will make an effort to attend the bowling alley regularly so that by the middle of next year we can have a larger and stronger team.

A few members were interested in learning to swim, but because of the scarcity of hot days during the summer, they didn't make much progress.

There are many sports that we could participate in, but you will have to make these desires known to the Athletic committee.

[[underline]] MEMBERSHIP [[/underline]]
The membership committee held its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Campbell. Names of prospective members were submitted and stationary was distributed to committee members. The following officers' wives are to receive letters this month:
Mrs E J Williams Mrs Ora Ellis
Mrs Redden Mrs Tyree
Mrs Carl Fountain Mrs McGee
Mrs Gillead Mrs James Hall

A complete list of the names of wives who have been sent letters along with other pertinent information was compiled.

Suggestions for the membership committee for the coming year were discussed and enumerated to be presented at the next meeting for the benefit of the new committee to be formed in January.
