PFC MANUEL A "ONE MAN SHOW" IN "OPERATION HAPINESS"

"A one man show!" is the description that best fits Private First Class Calvin Manuel as he appears five different times behind the footlights of "Operation Happiness," currently showing United States Air Force all airman show.

The 23 year old entertainment virtuoso was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, long renowned as the home of dance and entertainment immortals.

Following a 24 month stint in the Pacific Theater during World War II, Manuel was honorably discharged. He reenlisted in the Air Force in 1947, and was assigned to Lockbourne Air Force Base, Columbus, Ohio. There, he conceived and directed a variety show titled "Operation Enjoyment," the show which provided the nucleus for the present "Operation Happiness," sponsored by the USAF Special Services Division.

Manuel first appears in "Operation Happiness" as a musician who engages with four teammates in a battle of syncopation vs "be-bop." He follow this appearance as a member of a tap-dancing team in two feature numbers. Finally he becomes a comic in a rib-bustin' skit titled "Remote Control" in which he ponders with a "straight man" the problem of dividing into equal parts a fair maiden who has come, in some strange way, to be their joint property.

Manuel is a professional actor. He has played the snare drums in a symphony orchestra, and in dance bands. He has danced and acted on the professional stage since he was 16. Proud as Manuel may be of his work as an entertainer, he boasts most of a high school diploma recently received through courses take with the U.S. Armed Forces Institute.
