HEADQUARTERS, 332D FIGHTER WING
LOCKBOURNE AIR FORCE BASE
COLUMBUS 17, OHIO

31 May 1949

SUBJECT: Status of Lockbourne Air Force Base

TO: All Civilian Personnel

1. I strongly recommend that no one at this station arrive at any conclusions concerning the future status of Lockbourne Air Force Base at this time. Attention is invited to the fact that on 13 May 1949, a release was made by Headquarters, United States Air Force, to the effect that this station would remain active and that another unit would replace the 332d Fighter Wing. On 27 May 1949, a release was made by Headquarters, United States Air Force, announcing the inactivation of the 332d Fighter Wing. We are preparing for inactivation now, and absolutely no action is being taken to close this station.

2. I urge all personnel to perform duty properly. Reports have reached me that the level of individual efficiency has dropped since the publication of newspaper stories that Lockbourne will cease to be an Air Force base after 30 June 1949. It is entirely possible that this information is incorrect and that all civilian personnel will have continued employment at this station for an indefinite period. Under the latter circumstances it would certainly be regrettable for individual efficiency records to suffer at this time.

3. I shall personally inform all interested personnel when positive information becomes available as to the future status of this station. In the meantime, carry on as you have in the past.
