"Where the Colonial Office is paying the bill, it's their privilege to choose whom they please for the job, Blimp or no Blimp," he had informed the party-givers quite casually but convincingly.

EATING JIMCROW

Theodore K. ("Billy") Wint not only refused the jimcrow rail reservation which Pan American Airways, Kingston, reserved for him in June as of custom, but insisted that they change it immediately or else. PanAm obligingly did. But when Billy arrived in Miami, Florida, where jimcrow is law, the rail carriers merely gave him his choice of travelling jimcrow or not at all (SPOTLIGHT, Nov.).

U.S. citizen & onetime Golden Gloves champion Wint, had long hunted that kind of a fight. Reaching Brooklyn, N.Y., his home, he probably slapped an anti-segregation suit against East Coast Railway Co., Pennsylvania Railroad and PanAm in the Federal Court. PanAm wriggled out in the preliminary stage; they had committed no offence in informing the railroad that Passenger Wint is a Negro.

"From Now On." A mid-December release from New York told the final score. Tuesday, Nov. 16, the railroads settled with $250.00 compensation "for the embarrassment he suffered." Their attorneys simultaneously announced: "The American Railroads have decided to change their policy regarding coloured people. From now on ... any such person buying a reserve seat in any train going anywhere within the United States will not be compelled to change his seat or conform to any Jim Crow custom."

On the face of it, Billy Wint had scored a major victory in the worldwide war against racial discrimination and segregation. Question: Would coloured passengers be allowed to buy reserve seats on out-of-Miami trains?
