NEW DIRECTOR

Last July, after 16 years as Education Director, bald, balmy Berty Harry Easter retired (SPOTLIGHT, Aug.).  He had filled the post with dignity, had fathered many good reforms.

Search for a successor narrowed down to a man on the spot.  Tall, angular, 40-ish Harold Haughton had been around for some time.  He would formally take over as of New Year's Day.  Bearing in mind that in a country in impatient for positive and progressive results, there are already a plethora of triers who are not delivering the goods, Haughton would try to go one better.

Even head teachers had never heard of him before the official news of his appointment was released in November.  After 24 years in classrooms and three years touring various educational establishments in his home country, Englishman Haughton was imported in September '46 to be Education Planning Officer.

Braintruster At Work.  Jamaica had no previous E.P.O., therefore no fixed idea of what the braintruster should do.  He took his own time finding out from the stacks of reports and recommendations lying around the department, some of them only part-read or understood.  Reports of Professor Leon Kandel ('43)
