exchanging the rank of Ensign, USN, for that of 2nd Lt., CAC US Army. After a year as Battery Commander, in Dec. 1941, he became Asst. Army Operations and Liasion Officer at the Joint Operations Center Eastern Sea Frontier in Norfolk, Va. Here his duties principally involved liaison between Army Air Forces united and Naval Forces operating in the Atlantic. They included planning for the coordination of Joint Operations in Air Defense, Anti-submarine Warfare, and Amphibious Training. In 1944 he attended the C&GS School at Fort Leavenworth, and was then ordered to Hqs, Supreme Allied Commander, Southeast Asis, as a member of the Joint Planning Staff. After VE Day he became Director of Operations of US Forces in Southeast Asia with Hqs. in Singapore. In May 1946 he returned for duty with the War Dept. Plans and Operations Division, following which he attended a Far East course at Yale University Graduate School. He next participated in planning for establishment of CIA. In August 1947 he was ordered to the Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Fld to attend the second AC&S course. In June 1948 he reported to the AWC as an Instructor in the Intelligence Division. His wife, Becky, is also from Washington, D.C.

WILLARD W. SMITH, Colonel, 1374A

"Bill" was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 12, 1910, and spent early life in Texas Panhandle and then western Oregon, but he calls home where he hangs his hat. He graduated from Oregon State College in 1934 - majored in aeronautical engineering. He became a flying cadet in Oct. 1934, receiving his wings at Kelly Field in Oct. 1935. He had duty at Brooks Field until July 1937 when he was commission a 2nd Lt., AC, RA. He was then assigned to Moffett Field, Cal., where he was Base Adjutant until Aug. 1939. He proceeded overseas to Puerto Rico and was Asst. Air Officer until Oct. 1940 and Acting Air Officer until May 1942. In Feb. 1942 he became Sqdn. Comdr. of the 4th Recon. Sqdn. at Losey Field, Puerto Rico, and participated in antisubmarine operations until Jan. 1943. On returning to the U.S. he was assigned to Operations Div.m Hqs., 3rd AF, from Jan. to June 1943. He was then assigned to the WDGS in the Strategy and Policy Gp. of the Operations Div. until May 1945. From July through Oct. 1944 he was assigned to the 12th TAC and participated in the southern France operation. On leaving the WDGS, he was assigned to the 2nd AF B-29 program from June to Dec. 1945. His 2nd tour of duty in Washington was with the Policy Div., Plans Hqs, AAF, from Dec. 1945 to Aug. 1947. He attended AWC in 1947-48 and has been on the faculty since that time. Bill's hobbies are golf and photography. His wife, Ferne, is from Seattle, Wash. Children are Bill, Jr. (age 11), Jeffry (age 6), and Kent (age 2).
