MAX VAN ROSSUM DAUM, Lt. Colonel, USAF, 2154A

Max was born in Batavia on the island of Java on February 28, 1904. His family traveled extensively since his father was in diplomatic service and, consequently, he attended schools in several countries. He enlisted in the Air Corps in 1942, was given training in air intelligence and within three months he saw action in North Africa and Egypt. He took part in the invasion of Sicily, was wounded, reappeared in England and later in Italy. He became Commanding Officer of a combined team of intelligence specialists which landed in the Southern France invasion in 1944. Later that year he joined 9th Air Force Intelligence and ended the war at Berchtesgaden interrogating top generals of the Luftwaffe. He remained in Germany as Chief, Interrogation Section, USAFE, until early 1946. Upon his return he became faculty member of the newly-formed Air Command and Staff School, and after two years was appointed to the faculty of the Air War College. During his Air University career, he attended McGill University Summer Geography School in Canada, three annual seminars on Foreign Policy Problems at the Brookings Institute, and was a member of the U.S. delegation to the International Geographers Congress at Lisbon, Portugal. Max's hobbies are geopolitics, piano, Little Theater and gardening. His wife, "Jo," is from Seattle, Washington, and their son, Tobias (Toby) age 8, is a native of New York City.
