"Johnny" was born 20 December 1911, in Hancock, Mich. Attended the USNA, class of '34. Commissioned USMC on graduation, served in USS Pennsylvania and briefly in 6th Marines prior to flight training at Pensacola from which graduated in Jan. '38. Marine Fighting One at Quantico, Va., until July 41 when ordered as Exec of Marine Fighting 121, Quantico until 7 Dec. '41 then to San Diego. HERBERT N. COWLES, COLONEL, USAF, 1003A

"Herb" was born in Chicago on April 22nd 1908. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1930 and received a Master's degree in 1933. He was commissioned in the Infantry Reserve via the ROTC route, and was on active duty with the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and 1936. He was called to active duty with the Army Air Corps at Scott Field, Illinois in February 1941, and served as a personnel officer there and at Keesler Field and at the Basic Training Center at Kearns, Utah. From February 1943 until December 1944 he was A-1 of the Western Technical Training Command at Denver, Colorado. During this tour he was sent to the ETO as a special liaison officer for the Training Command. From December 1944 until the end of the war he was alternately A-1 and deputy A-1 of the Training Command at Ft. Worth, Texas. He attended the University of Michigan in 1945-6 as a student in a Post Hostilities course on Latin America. After completion he was again deputy A-1 of the Training Command, from which duty he reported to the AWC. His proposed assignment is in the War Plans Division of the DCS/R&O, Hq, USAF. His wife Barbara (Bobby) is from Rockford, Illinois. Children are Beth (age 11) and Joan (8).

WILLIAM J. CUMMINGS, JR., COLONEL, USAF, 1250A

"Bill" was born June 30, 1911 in Lawrence, Kans. He attended the University of Kansas and later joined the Air Corps, receiving his wings at Kelly Field in 1938. He served with the 3rd Attack Group, 20th Pursuit Group and 35th Pursuit Group at Barksdale and Moffett Fields until Oct. 1940, when he was shipped to the Philippines with the 20th Sq. of the 35th Pursuit Group.
