SAMUEL B. KNOWLES, JR, COLONEL, USAF, 1136A

"Tex" was born March 7, 1913 in a little village just south of Waco. However, San Antonio is what he now calls home. Graduated from West Point in '35 and Kelly in '36. He served two years with the 18th Pursuit Group in Hawaii and then returned to Kelly for a five year tour in the training business. In 1943, as the last Training Command CO of old Kelly Field, he turned the base over to the Materiel Command for consolidation with Duncan Field and was tranferred to the 14th AF in China. There he served first as Executive Officer of the 23rd Ftr Group, then as C/S and A-3 of the, Ftr Group charged with the defense of the China end of the "Hump" airlift. Upon return from CBI Tex commanded the P-38 CCTU at Portland, Oregon, served for a while as Chief of the Ftr Dvi., 4th AF Hqs, and at the end of the war was back in the Training Command. He attended the Second Command Class at Ft. Leavenworth in 1946 and then spent a little over a year as Director of Training at Williams AFB. Just before coming to the AWC, Tex was in Athens as A-3 of the AF Group, American Mission for Aid to Greece. His proposed assignment is with P&O, Hqs, USAF. Hobby: golf. His wife, Mary Lou, is a San Antonian. Children are: Diane (age 12), and Sam III (age 6).

HAROLD E. KOFAHL, COLONEL, USAF, 1616A

"Pappy" was born Dec. 19, 1913 and calls Gold Hill, Oregon his home. He attended Taft Junior College, Taft, California, and the Boeing School of Aeronautics at Oakland, Calif., graduating in 1993. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. for a year, then United Air Lines for three years. Wings were awarded at Kelly Field in Feb. 1938. The 1st Pursuit Group was his home for three years, then the next two years were spent in Hawaii. He spent a three month tour of duty in the US after the Southern France landings were made. Two years with Training Command Hqs, then a year and a half as National Guard Instructor. His next station was Hamilton Field with the 325th Ftr Group. In November 1948 he moved the 325th Ftr Wing to Moses Lake, Washington. His wife, Dorothy (Petey), is from Sugar City, Idaho. Children are Kristen (age 2), and Pat and Mike (age 1).

WALTER KRUEGER, JR., LT. COLONEL, USA, CE, 0-18351

"Benny" was born 25 April 1910, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After graduation from West Point in 1931, he was assigned to the Memphis Engineer District. In 1934, he received the degree of Civil Engineer at Cornell University. From 1934 to 1936, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, after a tour as Post Adjutant, he graduated from The Engineer School, then commanded a company, 5th Engineers. He was assigned in 1936 to Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, New York as Assistant PMS and T, of the new ROTC unit, which he aided in organizing
