EINAR A. MALMSTROM, COLONEL, USAF, 983A

"Mal" was born on 14 July 1907 at Chicago, Illinois and calls Spokane, Wash., home He was educated in Spokane and enlisted in Washington NG in 1929 and was commissioned 2nd Lt. in 1931. In 1933 he was graduated from the Air Corps Tech School specializing in aircraft armament. He continued to serve with the ANG until he came on active duty in 1940. Stations served at were Gray Field, Ft. Lewis, Pendleton, Ore., Paine Field, Wash., Salinas and San Francisco, Cal., as armament, sq operations and base operations officer and as wing A-3. He shipped overseas as A-3 of the 65th Ftr., Wing in May '43 with station at Debden and Saffron Walden, England. In Nov. 1943 he assumed command of the 356th Ftr Gp in the 8th AF at Martlesham Heath and flew 58 sorties before being shot down on a straffing mission in Germany in April 1944. He was taken prisoner and became the senior allied officer in the main compound of Stalag Luft I at Barth (on the Baltic) where he remained until the Russians moved in 1-13 May 1945. Upon return to the US, he served as Air Insp. IG, Deputy for Operations, Deputy for Reserve Forces for Hq 9 AF at Barksdale, Biggs, Greenville, S. C., Langley AFB and then came to the AWC. His next assignment is in the Eval Div. of the AU at Maxwell. "Mal's" hobbies are golf, fishing and photography. His wife, Kathryn (Kay) is from Indianapolis, Indiana and the children are Barbara (15) and Jim (13).

WILLIAM K. MARTIN, COLONEL, USAF 1679A

"Bill" was born 27, August 1915 and cals Ogden, Utah his home. He attended Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y. 1934-35 and graduated 1939 from the USMA. He received his wings and commission in the Air Corps in 1940. He was assigned immediately to heavy bombardment (B-17s) at Hamilton Field, Calif. In January 1943, he became CO of the 302nd B G (B-24s) at Clovis, N.M. but left that assignment in November for the 8 AF (#rd Fivisoin). He was Chief of Staff, 4th Combat Bomb Wing (B-17s); Dep C/S Operations, 3rd Air Division,; CO, 487th B G (B-17s) participating in 23 combat missions. Since the war his assignments have been CO B-29 transition school in 2nd AF a Pueblo, Colorado;Dep.. Wing CO (B-29s), Salina, Kansas; Student 2nd Command Cl., Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; War Department General Staff; and Chief Liaison Div., Public Relations, OSAF from which duty he reported to the AWC. His proposed assignment to Dep. Wg. CO, 509th B. Wg., SAC, Walker AFB, Roswell, N.M. Bill's hobbies are golf, squash, hunting and utility man about the house. His wife, Mary, is from Ogden, Utah. Children are Bill, Jr. (7), James Michael (4), and Mary Linda (1).
