ROBERT D. McCARTEN, COLONEL, USAF, AO-395169

"Mac" was born 1 June 1913 and lists Fargo, North Dakota as his permanent address. He graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College in 1935 with a BS degree in Arts and Sciences. Entered flying school in 1939. Upon graduation, joined the 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (L/R) and spent the next two years in this type of work. During the war he spent 35 months in the CBI theater where he organized and led the "Burma Bridge Busters," a B-25 outfit which specialized in low level attacks on bridges. This unit succeeded in destroying more than two hundred bridges in enemy held Burma, Thailand and China. After an 18 months combat tour, he was transferred to Headquarters, Tenth Air Force as Asst. A-3 in charge of combat operations. Later became Air Inspector, Tenth Air Force; spent last six months of tour on Lord Louis Mountbatten's staff. Returned to ZI and attended Command and General Staff School. Short tour with AMC and then to Yale University for a four months course in Asiatic Affairs. Ordered to Japan where he spent 34 months with Fifth Air Force. Last assignment in FAF was as Commanding Officer, 347th Fighter Wing, All Weather. His proposed assignment is to AFTRC with station at Ellington AFB. Hobbies are photography, badminton, and hiking. His wife, Leona, (Burt), is from North Dakota. Children are Richard (age 4) and Tommy (age 1).

CAMDEN W. McCONNELL, LT. COLONEL, FA, USA, 018437

"Cam" or "Mac" was born 23 June 1908; his home is Punxsutawney, Pa. Graduating from West Point in 1931, he was commissioned in the Field Artillery and assigned to Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He completed the Regular Course at the Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill in 1936 and an advanced course in 1937. He was with Department Hq. in Honolulu from 1939 to 1941, where he was married. After a short tour at Ft. Bliss he sailed for England 1 July 1942 with Hq. II Corps with whom he landed at Oran, Algeria in November. Taking command of a Tank Destroyer Battalion, he acquired over six hundred days in combat in all the campaigns in Tunisia and Italy. In March 1945 he became Executive to the Armored Officer, Fifth Army. After the war he went to Leavenworth for the 26th class, then became Chief of Research for Army Field Forces Board No. 2 at Ft. Knox, Ky. Here he was involved in the development of military characteristics and the testing of armored and automotive equipment. His duties included lecture tours to all the Field Forces Schools and Allied Conferences in England and France. From the AWC he will go to the Staff & Faculty of the Artillery School, Ft. Sill, Okla.
