NORMAN J. McGOWAN, COLONEL, USAF, 1694A

"Red" was born May 15, 1915, at Chicago, Illinois, which he still claims as his home. He attended the Armour Institute of Technology for two years, but left in 1935 to embark upon a career militaire as a cadet at the Military Academy. Graduated in 1939, attended primary flying school at Glenview, Illinois, and then went on to Randolph and Kelly. He served his first year in the Air Corps with the 7th Heavy Group at Hamilton Field and Salt Lake City, Utah, and the second year with the 24nd Medium Bomb Goup at Boise, Idaha. After studying airborne electronics three months at MIT and several months at Boca Raton, Fla, he became OIC of Flying Training at the latter station of the Technical Training Command. In early 1943, he transitioned on the B-17 at Sebring, Florida, and then went to North Africa to form the first "Ferret" squadron which reconnoitered the Mediterranean plotting German radar stations. About five months and twelve missions later, he reported to the Headquarters Med. Allied Air Forces and served the remainder of his 18 months overseas as a radar and communications staff officer. In December 1944, he came home to occupy a desk in the Pentagon until August 1949 when he was assigned to the Air War College. His Pentagon duty involved work on air defense, traffic control and navigation equipment matters and his last assignment was Chief, Electronics Division, Directorate of Communications. He now has orders to report back to Washington, Office of Deputy C/S Development. He has partially recovered from his dazed and groggy condition and the doctors say he is expected to survive. His hobbies are squash and golf and he hopes some day to be able to play at least one of those games. His wife, Elizabeth (Libbie) is from Winnetka. Children are Jimmy (age 7), Robert (age 4), and Mark (age 2).

HOWARD F. McMANUS, LT. COLONEL, INF., USAF, 0-20346

"Jiggs" was born 19 Feb. 1912 as a Dodger fan in Brooklyn, N. Y. He graduated from the USMA in 1936, served a tour in the Philippines, and attended the Infantry School at Ft. Benning, 1939-1940. He then served in the 20th Inf. Regiment through the 1940 maneuvers, and at Ft. Warren, Wy. In 1941, the 37th Inf. Regt. was formed and he went with it to Kodiak, Alaska as a company commander. In 1942, he commanded the 2nd Bn. in its landing on Amchitka. After bringing the battalion back to the States in 1944, he went to New Guinea to join 8th Army Hq. as a G-2 staff officer and served in that capacity through the Philippine Campaign and into Japan with time out for a brief return to the States to attend the C&GS College. He was ordered to the Training Section of Army Field Forces at Ft. Monroe, Va. in 1936, from which duty he reported to the Air War College. His next assignment is at Ft. Benning, Ga. His only hobby is sleeping. His wife, Helen, is from Brooklyn. Children are Roreen (age 5), and Howard R. (age 1).
