BARTON M. RUSSELL, COLONEL, USAF, 1395A

"Barney" was born January 29, 1913, at Carrolton, Missouri. Reared in Montana with Billings as his home town. He attended Montana State College for two years, then joined the United States Navy in 1935. While in the Navy, he served aboard the carrier USS Ranger as airplane mechanic and Flight Deck Traffic Control man. He was released May 1936 by Special Order Discharge to accept appointment as Flying Caded class of June 1936. He received his wings at Kelly Field in 1937. Upon graduation from flying school, he reported for duty with the Twentieth Pursuit Group at Barksdale Field, and served with this organization for seven and one half years. He went overseas as commanding officer of the Twentieth Fighter Group in August, 1943, with station at Kingscliffe, England. In March of 1944 he was assigned to Headquarters, Eighth Fighter Command on D.C. to Hq, 8th Air Force as Fighter representative with the Combined Operational Planning Committee. After the Normandy invasion he spent four months as Deputy Commander, 66th Fighter Wing. He returned to the ZI on September 1944 and after a leave period, assumed command of Santa Maria Army Air Field in California. After the war he returned to the European Theater and served at Neubiberg, Germany as commanding officer of the 357th Fighter Group. In November, 1947 he returned to the ZI and was assigned to the Fourth Air Force as A-3, and served in this section until December 1948, when he was given command of the 78th Fighter Group just reactivated and stationed at Hamilton Field, and from here he reported to the Air War College. His proposed assignment is Hq. 10th Air Force, Selfridge Air Force Base, Michigan. Barney's hobbies are shooting reloading ammunition, photography, hunting, fishing and golf. His wife, Bonnie is from San Antonio, Texas. Children are Peggy Jeanne, (page 12), Frances Ann (age 4), and Bonnie Beth (age 2).

EDWIN A. RUSSELL, JR., COLONEL, USAF, 1333A

"Al" was born 24 May 1914 and calls Baltimore Md. his home. He attended USMA, graduating in 1937 as a 2nd Lt. of Cavalry. He served with the 5th Cavalry at Ft. Clark, Texas until July 1939 at which time he joined the 13th Cavalry (Mech.) at Ft. Knox, Ky. He served in the 13th until he became Ex. O of CC"B", 1st Armored Division, 1 January 1942, in which capacity he went overseas three months later, landed in N. Africa in November 1942 and finished the African campaign. In June 1943 he became G-3 of the 1st Armored Division and served in that position through Anzio until June 1945 with intermittent jobs of CO, 81st Recon. Bn and CO, CC"B". Upon return to the ZI in July 1945, he joined the WDGS to become Chief, Plans and Policy Section in the Organization Branch of G-3 where he remained until he reported to Primary Flying School at Randolph Field, Texas.
