My dear Sir:

Upon my return to New York, my galleries having been closed during the month of August, I learned of your visit in July which I am indeed sorry to have missed.

The message left for me by my assistant who received you in my absence is not quite clear, and I am wondering whether you would mind writing me on this topic.

If I understand correctly, you would like to obtain some information about a portrait of a woman by Baron Gros which you have in your possession. Should I be able to help you in this matter, I will be glad to do so as soon as I will have heard further from you.

Yours very sincerely,

Germain Seligman
