adjustments which are necessary to all machines and can not rightly be classed under the head of "troubles". When the N-C-4 landed in Plymouth it was probably better fit for a fifteen hour run than when it left from Trepassey and except for a slight reduction in power would have made the trip as well as it did the first time.

2. The following recommendations are made as a result of the experiences given above:

(a) In view of the fact that most of the delays in starting were due to dirt stopping the carburetor jets, it is recommended that only metal to metal unions be used in the gasoline line which joints may be protected by rubber but that no rubber slip joints should be used. In this connection the carburetors should be placed on the outside of the motor instead of the rather inexcessive position which they now hold between the cylinders. This can be done by changing the camshafts and making suitable manifolds.

(b) As the starting battery is now used also for ignition, it would simplify the charging and ignition circuit if both circuits were twelve volts, the present ignition circuit being eight volts.

(c) Do away with the differential type throttle and use a separate throttle for each engine, first, because the present device gives considerable trouble after being exposed to the weather, and second, because the separate method is preferred by the pilots.

(d) Place the gauge glass in the center of gravity of the fuel tanks so that the level will be a true reading of the amount in the tanks and will not be influenced by the angle of the boat.

(e) Have separate oil tanks for each engine so that in case of a leak only one engine is effected.

(f) The engineer should have on his instrument board - Airspeed meter, altimeter, air thermometer, water thermometer, tachometer, oil pressure gauge, and the necessary ameters, switches and fuzes to control all the circuits on the boat. The pilots board should contain, besides the airspeed meter and altimeter, only tachometers. In this connection a pneumatic chronometric tachometer should be used so that two or more heads can be installed and long flexible shafts done away with.
