Troops had been ordered to occupy the Cambrai - Le Cateau - Landrecies position. It seemed inadvisable to stay - Troops exhausted, French retiring, tendency of enemy to envelop from west. Orders given to retire, Cavalry under Allenby to cover retirement.

25th  1st corps marched east of Forêt de Mormal to Landrecies. Arrived exhausted, could not rest as Germans attacked heavily.

Haig heavily engaged south & east of Maroilles Urgent message sent to 2 French reserve Divisions to assist 1st corps.

25th Smith-Dorrien reported impossible to continue retirement in face of attack.

Gen. Sordêt could not come up owing to the fatigue of his horses. It became apparent if complete annihilation was to be avoided, retirement must be attempted. Movement covered by Artillery saving of left wing of army on 26th due to coolness of Smith-Dorrien.

Retreat continued 26th 27th 28th when the troops halted on line Noyon-Chauny-La Fère.
