O At first it seemed strange to meet English officers going in and out of the Ritz. They fought a battle in the morning and then came down to lunch at the Ritz. That's what we were told any way. They always looked smart, in spite of the fact that they often looked very tired. Their kharki figures were almost the only ones one saw in the beginning when I got to Paris. Some times a Maharaja livened up the scene or the black servant of some Indian Prince met in the hall made one remember that the stories that more Indians were on their way to the front was probably true. The Place Vendome does not look as it ordinarily does. In front of the Ritz were always a number of military cars - usually one small one at least with a gun - several Red Cross cars and one could not move without meeting officers.
