++ At Echoeun we were stopped several times It is one of the big forts of the Camp Retrancher of Paris, played a large part in the 1870 war. Beyond were many trenches and wire entanglements.
1 They tell all kinds of stories about people going out who had absolutely no business to. calling themselves war correspondents or one story of a very attractive woman who was ^[[really]], I believe a correspondent for a London daily. ^[[She]] was taken to see a battle and she ^[[& the man who was with her]] got nearer than they cared to as the firing turned in an unexpected direction. The man rushed for the shelter of some bushes leaving the motor in the middle of the road. He looked around in a moment for the girl and could not see her anywhere Shells were bursting all over the place. He rushed out into the road and there she was behind the motor powdering her nose.
He afterwards asked her what her impression of her first battle was. She thought for a moment for a moment & then she said "It was very chic".
