guns - the famous "75".  In Luzarches the square was full of them lined up one next to the other.  All grey, all waiting to deal out death.  The horses of the French looked tired mostly & not in very good condition.

The roads were bad, very wet and slippery. Champoiseau still kept up his terrific speed.  I realized sometimes that we were going north, faster surely than anyone else could take us  At Clermont we asked the woman who cooked our eggs how near the Germans were.  She was knitting, she did not know but called her husband - "25 or 30 K. not more".

We took a rather longer route than the regular one so as to be nearer the Germans - turning at St Just to go to Montdidier, where we were only about 12 K. from the actual fighting lines.  I listened impatiently for sounds but heard none.  However all about in this district the road became even more interesting. ^[[X]] On both sides of the road we passed camps, hastily constructed shelters for men, quantities of horses fastened
