You could not be in Paris without feeling the tension. Many stores were closed, but some were open. The streets were empty as a whole, the Champs Elysées literally bare. Very little trafic of any kind and that little almost entirely confined to ambulances, motor trucks and motors with men in uniform. Every night a huge searchlight swept the sky in every diretion from the top of the Crillon Hotel Place de la Concorde. There was so little light in the streets one could scarcely see and every one went about their own business.
