Dear General Davis-

We cleaned up the 51st side in fine shape before the last men left the 24th of August. The hangar was being used by the 319th so we didn't touch that. All buildings were closed and accepted the 24th except BOQ 1203 where I stayed that night & turned it in the 25th. We even did some grass cutting.

On the 8th side, I did some investigation work & court-martials - of which they had too many. Maj Berner was given the Motor Veh Sq & did a fine job - morale picked up immediately - he killed 4 courts-martial cases & effectively issued proper punishment at SQ level. With practically no information to go on, he did his best to get the unit ready to move. I suppose they have gone by now and I hope he is on his way home to Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The typhoon damaged the tails of both 8th gooney birds so I got a lift as far as Nagoya in the 5th C-47. Saw Paul Spivey there & had to borrow his coat to get dinner. I checked in at Fuchu 8 AM the 4th & at 1300 they gave us 20 minutes to get the bus for Haneda where ^[[Lt. Col.]] Dave Irvine & I caught a MATS plane out that evening. During a 15-hour layover in Honolulu, I cabled Martha I was enroute so she met me in San Francisco. We spent the week-end with Ricky at Stanford University. He likes it very much
