Dear Ben:

Although our paths have not crossed for a number of years, I have followed you by word of mouth from classmates and have read about you occasionally in the press.

With regard to the most recent news, your promotion to Brigadier General, I want you to know how sincerely pleased I am that your ability has been so recognized.  In my opinion it couldn't have happened to a better man.
I hope that this is only the first of a series of more stars to come.
If you should come to Washington in the future, be sure to come see the Partridges.
Again, congratulations on your well deserved promotion.
