morning. There I found that the steamer would dock between two and three, and, fortunately, got to the dock in time to welcome Kate before two o'clock. It was a wonderful day, and it was mighty good to see Kate again, as I wrote you. Later in the afternoon, we went to see her little flat which is very nice, but, unfortunately, there has been some hitch about the studio, the manager having promised to build one on the top of the roof. Kate found that he could not build as big a one as she wanted, although she had given him exact measurements, and then he offered to break partitions, and turn one of the little flats into a studio.  This sounded pretty well, but then he wanted her to rent it for five years which she didn't want to do.  Later he offered to build a studio which is to be put up now, but that will be delayed for months, so it was quite a problem what to do.  I do not know what Kate has finally decided, as I left with the things still in the air, the difficulty being to find a studio in Boston which is available at present. I was amazed to find that she had accepted an invitation to be away over Thanksgiving, as I thought she would either surely come home or I would go to her somewhere, but as these other plans had been made, of course, there was nothing to do. We parted on Sunday, she going on to Stonington, and I to Albany where I stayed up to Wednesday night when I came back.

We had hearings in Albany, on different bills, and
