^[[ [Mary Dreier] [Nov. 1913] ]]

Four lean years were Tammany's portion under Mayor Gaynor, according to Mr. Tom Foley, and we look to you to give them four [[strikethrough]] more [[/strikethrough]]leaner years under Mr. Mitchell.

The way that you are going to vote affects us vitally, and I know in what I am about to say I voice the hopes and desires of thousands of voteless citizens who as yet have no[[strikethrough]]t[[/strikethrough]] power. Our whole lives--as mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, working women--are bound up in the government of this city. We need, and therefore want an incorruptible Health Department because this means pure food and unadulterated milk for our children.

[[strikethrough]] We need [[/strikethrough]] An incorruptible Police Department because it means safety and protection, both physical and moral, for our children whose only playground is the street.

[[strikethrough]] We need [[/strikethrough]] An incorruptible Fire Department, which means safety for the multitude of workers, men and women, yeas and unhappily boys and girls whose lives are spent in the factory. Just the other day eight lives were lost because of a badly constructed fire escape.

All departments of our city are woven into our very life--and we want them to be, not only as good as they now are but better. The heads of these departments are appointed by the mayor of the city, and it depends upon you men whether [[strikethrough]] it shall be [[/strikethrough]] Mr. Mitchell or Mr. Murphy [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] shall name them.
