[[underline]] Remarks. [[/underline]]

I have not been able to visit, & inspect [[underline]] all [[/underline]] these schools, personally, on account of having no horse at command, & the high price of Buggy-hire in this place — but I have carefully ascertained their condition thro. the Col'd preachers & Superintendents, And am now engaged in visiting as many of them as possible.

I have reason to believe that they are doing great good, & will prepare the way for daily Common Schools, in every neighborhood — to be formed when provided for, by new legislation. —

Meanwhile, by these humble means the Freedmen are learning to read, at least. And the Holy Scriptures [[underline]] are provided for all [[/underline]] who desire to have them, by me — thro. the kindness of the Am. Bible Society —

Respectfully Submitted,
