carry him to Goldsboro' Jail in Wayne County about 20 miles from [[underlined]] their place, [[/underlined]] tied him with rope and brutally treated him, their reason being for supposed horse stealing. The four citizens returned to the house in about two hours after [[underlined]] "whit" out [[/underlined]] the freedman, it was impossible for them to go to Goldsboro' in such a short time and return. The freedman diappeared and fear is entertained by the others that he was murdered, all the parties belong to this County and if their intention was really to arrest him they would have confined him at this place. Herring says he stole away from the plantation to report the fact to me and that they dare not to search for their friend being affraid that Price and the others might kill him, as soon as I recd the above information I wrote to Mjor Stickly in charge of Goldsboro district and requested him to notify me by telegraph Quash Whitfield is confined there
