he asserts the contrary as it was [[underlined]] stated to his Wife [[/underlined]] very distinctly by [[underlined]] my daughter [[/underlined]] when the [[underlined]] first payment was made. [[/underlined]] He also heard me mention very frequently what my terms were [[underlined]] once [[/underlined]] that I am sure of [[underlined]] in the presence of an Officer [[/underlined]] who came with [[underlined]] him [[/underlined]] to get board - as I then stated in his presence that I was then boarding for [[underlined]] $10.00 per week [[/underlined]] if one roomed in the house & $8.00 if they roomed out. I would not think of boarding for [[underlined]] $40.00 [[/underlined]] for [[underlined]] 30 or 31 days [[/underlined]] as I found it impossible to make expenses at $10.00 [[underlined]] per week [[/underlined]] also [[underlined]] furnishing wood & lights, [[/underlined]] & have since that time raised to $12.00 so as to make my table expenses. I send for your inspection a letter from Capt. Shaffer - as I reported the case to Gen Howard. That I have no such uncomfortable room as the one described by Capt. S. can be testified to by any one who has ever been through any part of my house. But even admitting the accommodations to be such as described by him, he remained during the first court & strange to say expressed himself as perfectly satisfied with his room [[underlined]] at my table [[/underlined]] in the [[underlined]] presence of all. [[/underlined]] He knew my terms also what kind of accommodation I furnished, remained, & should [[underlined]] therefore pay for his board. [[/underlined]] I would like very much to have this money collected if there is any way to get money from such a man. Any honorable man would settle such an account without having it exposed to every one.

Very Respectfully.
