Greenvill, N.C. May 17th 1867 Dear General: Mr: J.J. Perkins informed me, that among the men he recommended for suitable Registrars for Pitt County that he recommended me, to you, among others. I must inform you that I have always been one of the truest union men in North Carolina, this I can establish by Gov. Holden, and a host of others, if necessary, but in 1862 I was conscripted, and to make my chance more certain of getting discharged I volunteered for the 55 Regmt, and was immediately discharged
