My dear Alfred;
All day the long train went upgrade into the mountain ranges. There were two engines and three mail cars & you could often see them from the sleeper or platform window because the track curved in large figure S's and the train looked like a snake sometimes trying to "snap the whip".

When it reached the highest point at a place called Glorietta, one engine was taken off and we went down from the pass to Lamy.
