ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

Current Biography (published every month except August) presents articles on people who are prominent in the news--in national and international affairs, the sciences, the arts, labor, and industry. Sources of information are newspapers, magazines, books, and, in some cases, the biographees themselves. It should be pointed out, however, that these are objective rather than authorized biographies. At the end of the year the articles in the monthly issues are cumulated in one alphabet, revised, and printed in a single volume known as Current Biography yearbook.

Authorities for biographees' full names, with some exceptions, are the bibliographical publications of The Wilson Company. When a biographee prefers a certain name form, that is indicated in the heading of the article: for example, THORNTON, DAN(IEL I. J.) means that he is usually referred to as DAN THORNTON. When a professional name is used in the heading, as, for example, CYD CHARISSE, the real name, in this case TULA ELLICE FINKLEA, appears in the article itself.

The heading of each article includes the pronunciation of the name if it is unusual, date of birth (if obtainable) and occupation. The article is supplemented by a list of references to sources of biographical information in two alphabets: (1) newspapers and periodicals and (2) books.

Referencse to newspapers and periodicals are listed in abbreviated form; for example, "Sat Eve Post 217:14+ S 30 '44 por" means Saturday Evening Post, volume 217, pages 14 ff, September 30, 1944, with portrait. For full names, see the section "Periodical and Newspaper Abbreviations," which is included in all Current Biography Yearbooks and in the January edition each year. Obituary notices appear for persons whose biographies have been published in Current Biography.

An index to names which have appeared this year is to be found at the back of this issue.

NOTE: Authors whose biographies do not appear in Current Biography may usually be found in Twentieth Century Authors, Kunitz & Haycraft, 1942, H.W. Wilson Company, or will be included in the FIRST SUPPLEMENT to be published in late 1955. Authors of books for young people are included in The Junior Book of Authors (Second Edition, Revised) edited by Kunitz & Haycraft, 1951, H. W. Wilson Company.
