[[underlined]] National Board Membership Changes [[/underlined]]

The Nominating Committee of the National Board of the Smithsonian Associates met on January 19, 1989 to consider nominees to the Board. The following nominations were made:

The election of new members will be held in April when the Board meets in Jackson, Mississippi for its annual Spring Meeting. Retiring from the National Board in April, after six years of service will be: William W. Boeschenstein, James H. Clement, and Marshall Field. The current membership of the National Board is listed at the front of [[underlined]] Smithsonian [[/underlined]] magazine.

[[underlined]] Developing a New Corporate Associate Program [[/underlined]]

The National Associates Program has added a professional staff member to fashion a pan-Institutional Corporate Associates Program. This program is expected to encourage broad-based, unrestricted donations from a sector which is increasingly aware of and interested in a philanthropic component. Levels of membership will be graded to encourage the broadest possible participation. A pilot project and founding membership should be in place by summer.

[[underlined]] Major Planning and Construction Projects [[/underlined]]

Construction of the Smithsonian Information Center in the Castle Building is on schedule for completion in May. The contract for the renovation of the Freer Gallery, including construction of the underground link to the Sackler Gallery, was awarded in January to Jowett, Inc. in the amount of $9.4 million. Construction is under way and is expected to be finished in July 1990.

Construction of the Tupper Laboratory and Conference Center in Panama is 78% complete and is now expected to be finished in June. Construction of the Dining and Conference Center on Barro Colorado Island is expected to be completed in August 1989. The design of the Barro Colorado Laboratory is expected to be complete in September and construction is projected to begin in January 1990. The design of the Whipple Observatory Base Camp facility is in progress. The
