The legendary anthropologist Ales Hrdlicka, whose collections of human skulls and skeletons built the National Museum of Natural History into a position of pre-eminence, will be highlighted in this program which examines the qualities that make us human and explores how perceptions of what is human have changed over time according to cultural biases and historical context.

"Planet in Peril" (Working Title for Alternate Fifth Program). Smithsonian World examines the environmental issues which affect our planet's fragile future. In a unique format which pits the powers of nature against the wits of international policymakers, we will explore the environmental scenarios for the survival of planet Earth.
