referred to as the "Museum"), the nature, objects, and purposes of which shall be

(a) to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit all things connected with the anthropology of the indigenous people of North, South, and Central America, including objects of artistic, historic, literary, and scientific interest;

(b) to advance the study of anthropology, particularly in connection with that of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and the study of their languages, literature, history, art, and life;

(c) to advance programs of research and study; and

(d) to provide means for carrying on this work in the District of Columbia, the State of New York, and elsewhere as may be appropriate.

(2) The area bounded by Third Street, Maryland Avenue, Independence Avenue, Fourth Street, and Jefferson Drive in the District of Columbia is appropriated to the Institution as the permanent site of a building for the Museum.

(3) A significant facility for the Museum consisting of approximately 82,500 square feet, including space shared with the General Services Administration shall be established in the Old United States Custom House at 1
