[[underlined]] World Environment Policy Act of 1989 [[/underlined]] - S. 201: Introduced January 25, 1989 by Senator Gore (D-OK); to Environment and Public Works. Directs the President to establish the Council on World Environmental Policy to replace existing Council on Environmental Quality and broadens functions. Also establishes a National Center for Biological Diversity and Environmental Research with a nine-member governing board that includes a Smithsonian representative.

[[underlined]] World War II Memorial and Museum [[/underlined]] - H.R. 537: Introduced January 19, 1989 by Mr. Kaptur (D-OH); to House Administration and Veterans' Affairs. Provides for the American Battle Monuments Commission to establish a World War II Memorial and Museum advisory Board, which includes a Smithsonian representative, to promote establishment of and encourage donations to a memorial and museum on Federal lands in the District of Columbia. The Smithsonian, as well as any department, agency, or instrumentality of the U.S. Government, may assist the Commission and transfer any real property to it.

S. 160: Introduced January 25, 1989 by Senator Thurmond (R-SC); to Energy and Natural Resources. Requires construction of a memorial only, and stipulates that Smithsonian and the heads of Executive branch establishments may provide assistance.

[[underlined]] ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1988 [[/underlined]]

The Chancellor drew the Regents' attention to the annual report for fiscal year 1988, copies of which were on the table. The following motion was suggested and approved:

VOTED that the Board of Regents accepts the Annual Report of the Secretary for fiscal year 1988.

There will be placed on the Regents' table at the May 8 meeting, if not distributed in advance of the meeting, the Smithsonian's annual report for fiscal year 1988. Once accepted by the Regents, this report will be mailed to members of the Congress, officials in the Administration, numerous other officials in Washington, the press, and a long list of Smithsonian friends and major donors throughout the nation; additional copies will be sent to local and national Depository Libraries (designated by the Government Printing Office) and others will be sent to museums, government agencies, and a wide variety of domestic and international institutions of learning. In all, approximately 5,000 copies will be distributed in print and another 4,000 copies will be in microfiche.
