5 September Aunty nixed with me for forgetting to come home last night and help get tea. We seem to be farther & farther apart every day. She can not bear to sit in the same room with me. Went out to buy some flowers to paint and found a letter from Alice on the table. Read it going along the road to the greenhouse -- such a letter! How is it possible that Alice can love me like that. But instead of being ashamed of my moral inadequacy, I stumbled along the road rapturously imagining myself tall and beautiful and therefore worthy of Alice's affection. found two four leaved clovers Painted furiously all [[end page]] [[start page]] the rest of the day. It is strange how impossible it is to paint a rose the natural size. As one looks it seems to fill the eye and become larger & larger. Wish I could get away from home. It is impossible for Aunty & I to live together. September 11th Sunday Bessie Grey married to Henry Holt. 7:30 P.M If all is true that one thinks about this marriage, it is a pretty tragic affair for Mr. Holt. Intellectuality married to everything that is ordinary and earthy. (but good)
